Other Suggested Activities

There is so much to do in and around Hobart. Some other suggestions for the conference days include:

• Port Arthur Historic Site Tour
About 1.5 hours drive from Hobart, Port Arthur is a site rich in history, dating back to 1830. A whole day (or more) can easily be spent here. See http://www.portarthur.org.au

• Richmond Village is a town about 25 km north-east of Hobart. It is a major tourist attraction full of gift shops, craft shops and eateries. There must have been a time when Richmond was one of the most charming places in Australia. Set in gently undulating country on the banks of the Coal River it has no fewer than 45 buildings listed on the National Estate and, in many ways, it is a town which has been held in time. It has now become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tasmania. This has meant that old Georgian stone houses, commercial buildings and hotels have been converted into gift shops, Devonshire tea places, restaurants, craft shops, and museums. It is well worth the step back in time. See: http://www.richmondvillage.com.au/

• Mount Wellington
Towering over 1200 metres above Hobart, Mount Wellington is a short drive from the centre of town. On a clear day drive 22km to the top of Mount Wellington, which you've seen every day since you arrived in Hobart. And every day it's been different - bathed in a rosy glow at dawn, resplendent in the noonday sun, darkly silhouetted at dusk.

From the top you'll see miles and miles up the Derwent Valley, down to the Southern Ocean and across to Port Arthur. The inlets, bays and hills of this beautiful city are spread out in a stunning panorama, explained in detail in the lookout at the summit. Shuttles depart from the hotel to take you to the summit.

AFIF Golf Challenge: Tasmania Golf Club

WEDNESDAY 6 May 2009

Bounded by water on three sides, the spectacular Tasmania Golf Club course is set on the picturesque Barilla Bluff, where it has been since 1971. Tasmania Golf Club has been ranked as high as No 32 in Australia.

This course in the South and Barnbougle in the North represent the best golf challenges in Tasmania (according to many) and maybe to an even wider area - try them and findout. You will be impressed.

The course was created by curator Ian Grimsey under the guidance of noted course architect, Mr. Al Howard. The feature hole of the course is the par 5, 3rd hole. From the championship markers it is awe inspiring and has been more than favourably compared to the notorious 18th hole at California's Pebble Beach layout.

Features of the Day
  • 11.00am start time at the course
  • Team prizes and individual prizes
  • Team Perpetual Trophy awarded
  • Lunch included
  • Prizes for: Longest Drive, Straightest Drive, Nearest to Pin, Winning 4 Ball Group, Runner Up 4 Ball Group, Corporate Group and of course, a hole in one!
Cost: $125 per AFIF delegate
$165 for non-registered persons

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR 2009

  • Buses will depart from Hotel Grand Chancellor at 10.40am for the 15 minute trip to the golf course.
  • Alternatively, the course is located a 3 minute drive from the airport, and if you are flying into Hobart that morning, and want to go directly to the course, we will be in contact closer to the date of the conference to discuss arrangements to transport you from the airport directly to the golf course.
Please note - sponsorship of holes is available to companies interested in participating. Please contact the conference secretariat for details. The only way for a company team to be entered into the competition is to take out a corporate sponsorship. All other teams will be at the discretion of the organiser
