IMPORT ICS IMPLEMENTATION DATE There has been much conjecture as to whether ACS will be in a position to introduce the import ICS system as planned on 1 July, 2004. The release date will hinge upon successful testing of system interface with industry software. We will keep you informed of developments.

MARITIME SECURITY BILL INTRODUCED TO FEDERAL PARLIAMENT Federal Government is currently discussing the new Maritime security legislation bill which will require individual shipping operators to develop security plans to be approved by the Department of Transport and Regional Services. The new legislation includes ports and introduces offences and penalties and in many ways will be similar to the regulations covering aircargo. AFIF will regularly update its website under SEAFREIGHT NEWS to keep you posted on developments.

NEW IATA AIRWAYBILL REQUIREMENTS COMING IATA Cargo business and processes panel have passed a resolution which will bring into effect changes to the airwaybill effective 1 January 2004. We have extracted excerts from the IATA Resolutions and these will be pasted onto the AFIF website under Airfreight News. Please review these changes and ensure all staff are aware.

ACS DETECTOR DOG PROGRAM for FIREARMS & EXPLOSIVES The ACS has widened its ‘Detector Dog’ program to include training in firearms and explosives detection. The dogs will undertake comprehensive training which will include conducting exercises in operational environments such as freight depots; terminals; customs premises etc. Members may be requested to assist Customs in this regard and we would encourage you to please give this program your full support !
AUSTRALIAN LOGISTICS COUNCIL INAUGURAL ANNUAL FORUM The ALC (Australian Logistics Council) will be holding it’s first annual forum, in Canberra on 21 & 22 October 2003. This will become an important forum for all participants in freight logistics, transport and related industries. We encourage members to attend and the official invite can be downloaded from the ALC website.
AFIF CHALLENGES SYDNEY AIRPORTS NORTHERN LANDS DECISION Sydney Airport Freight Users Group which includes airline reps; Export Airfreight Council; AFIF; CTO’s etc have openly challenged the decision by Sydney Airport to construct the future aircargo terminals on the so-called ‘northern lands’ site. AFIF believe that the site will prove impractical primarily due to insufficient high volume road access and lack of future development potential.
TRANSPORT SECURITY WORLD AUSTRALIA 2003 AFIF supports “Transport Security World 2003” to be held at the Westin Hotel Sydney November 10-12, 2003 ( please refer link in EVENTS section of AFIF website www.afif.asn.au ) This seminar will contain the very latest transport security information and we urge all members to book their spot. NEW AQIS CD NOW AVAILABLE The industry working group Quarantine has overseen the production of a new version of the comprehensive information CD on Australian Quarantine requirements. Minister Warren Trust launched the CD in Canberra at the end of September and should any member require a copy of this for their customers or overseas offices please contact AFIF.
The AFIF QLD Charity Ball was held on 11 October 2003 at The Gabba. The night was a huge success and has been described as the best yet! There were 230 persons in attendance with a huge $10,000 raised for Surf Life Saving Queensland. Well done and congratulations to the organising committee led by Jodi Latham.
