statistics show the continuing recovery in imports although, at 31 000
tonnes, imports are still below trend. The recovery is mostly due to imports
of high value product. Exports are also returning
to normal levels at about 22 000 tonnes and well above the previous
corresponding period. Perishables, particularly
fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood continue to dominate exports,
particularly from Melbourne, but the real story is meat exports through
Melbourne which have passed the 2000 tonne mark for the first time. While imports of machinery,
appliances and clothing are all showing signs of recovery |
