Dear Sydney Ports Customer

Container wharfage increases with effect from 1 September 2007

Sydney Ports Corporation will increase wharfage charges on overseas full import containers by $20 per TEU and on all empty containers by $10 per TEU, effective from 1 September 2007. There will be no change to overseas full export container wharfage charges, or any other charges applied by Sydney Ports Corporation in Sydney Harbour or Port Botany.

Sydney Ports is progressing the development of additional container handling infrastructure at Port Botany to ensure that the port will continue to be able to cater for long-term trade growth and provide certainty and reliability to shippers and users of the port.

The wharfage rate increases are required to support the funding of the Port Corporation's share of the infrastructure investment at Port Botany and for other increasing costs of port operations.

Sydney Ports has a good record of maintaining stable wharfage charges. Wharfage for import containers was reduced in stages from $100.00 per TEU in 1991 to $60.00 in 1995. Empty container charges were reduced in 1999 from $10 per TEU to nil. Wharfage charges on overseas full import containers have not increased in more than a decade which has resulted in cost reductions in real terms of around 69% on overseas import containers and 61% on overseas export containers since 1991. This represents significant cost savings to the NSW and Australian business communities over a sustained period.

Charges for overseas full and empty containers will therefore be as follows:

·        $81.50 per TEU (excl. GST) on overseas full import containers ($20.00 per TEU increase)
·        $46.50 per TEU (excl. GST) on overseas  full export containers (no increase)
·        $10.00 per TEU (excl. GST) on overseas empty containers ($10.00 per TEU increase)

The new charges will apply from 1 September, 2007 to ensure there is sufficient time to communicate these charges.

Sydney Ports will continue to review all port charges annually.
